Pictographs Found

Success!  Team XplorMor has hiked the Piedra Blanca Trail in Los Padres National Forest, located near the Ojai Valley in Southern California, numerous times to study its unusual rock formations, and to seek out the well hidden petroglyphs.  On this last expedition we located them, and discovered three important points: first, there's more than one location, second, it's good they are hidden as one of the locations has serious vandalism, and third, they are not petroglyphs but pictographs.  I'll explain the difference...
Piedra Blanca Petroglphys XplorMor Inc
XplorMor Piedra Blanca Expedition
There are four major types of rock art: petroglyphs, cupules, geoglyphs, also known as intaglios, and pictographs.  Petroglyphs are rock engravings produced by carving or striking the rock surface using various techniques (See photo: Darien Gap).  Cupules are small cup-shaped indentations made in rock that may appear in a pattern or at random.  They are a type of petroglyph in that stone is ground or carved out to create them.  Geoglyphs are giant drawings made on the ground presumably depicting geometric designs, human forms and animals.
Pictographs are a fragile cousin to petroglyphs.  They are designs drawn on rock surfaces with paints made from natural mineral pigments applied with fibrous brushes or with hands and fingers.  These pigments were mixed with binders such as oil, blood or urine.  Hematite (iron oxide), the most common color in Southern California, was used for creating red paints, and presumably those of Piedra Blanca.  Pictographs were typically drawn in caves, overhangs and alcoves where they would be better protected from harsh weather elements.

2nd Annual Project Solar Day 12/21/13

Join the Event on Facebook. Everyone is welcome!
Project Solar Day aims for participants to post photos of the sun traveling around the planet on a single day as seen through each person’s perspective, and to promote getting out there and sharing the experience through photography.
Inspiration from 1st XplorMor Project Solar Day 12/21/12
The reason for participating is to have fun.  It’s about coming together as a community and sharing our vision, creativity and a moment of our day.  The photos may also allow us to see other parts of the world.   And, if the weather is bad and the sun doesn't come out, add some innovation.

Devils and Rainbows

In October, just skirting the US Government shutdown, the XplorMor Team ventured to Rainbow Falls and Devil's Postpile in Inyo National Forest, near Mammoth Lakes, California.  Both are easy hikes through high mountain country.  The trail winds near the San Joaquin River, and offers wildlife sightings (we saw several deer and many birds) and panoramic views of the High Sierra Nevada Mountains.

XplorMor Expedition to Rainbow Falls, Devil's Postpile, Inyo National Forest
Devil's Postpile is a spectacular columnar rock formation, towering 60 ft in the air.  It is a short hike from the parking area which may be used on designated times in the winter or a shuttle is offered in the summer.  From Devil's Postpile the trail continues to Rainbow Falls, the highest waterfall on the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River, plunging 101-feet into a rocky basin.  The falls are named for rainbows that appear in its mist throughout summer days, generally around noon when the sun is highest.  We sadly missed them by arriving late in the afternoon on an October day.
Both natural monuments are wonders worth experiencing.  No matter the time of year you find yourself in the park, I'm sure there will be beauty.

Nature's Gold

Lundy Canyon Trail follows Lundy Canyon into the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Inyo National Forest, California.  The trail winds through Aspen Groves which offer spectacular colors in the Fall.  The best time to see autumn is late September to mid-October when the Aspen leaves turn an incredible bright yellow.  Nature's Gold.

XplorMor Lundy Canyon Expedition
We drove along Lundy Canyon road to see the incredible colors thanks to a recommendation from some Lee Vining locals.  We didn't know what to expect, and nearly stopped at the Lundy Canyon Resort area, believing the continuing dirt road lead only to private properties.  But again, thanks to some kind locals, we were instructed to continue the drive until the dirt road ends in a loop and the trailhead begins.  We set out on an unexpected hike, and into a gorgeous frontier filled with mountains, forests, lakes, rivers and large waterfalls!  Beautiful frontier expedition.

A Hidden Gem

Panum Crater is a hidden gem, literally.
Located adjacent to Mono Lake in north-eastern California, off Mono Lake Basin Road, or Highway 120 East, Panum Crater is a geological wonder with giant shards of obsidian (the largest I've ever seen) and contrasting rough chunks of pumice (pick one up to feel its weight). The other-worldly crater is worth the short hike; it's as though you step onto another planet the moment you enter its core.
Panum Crater Hike XplorMor Inc
XplorMor Panum Crater Expedition
There are two trails at Panum Crater, one leads into the core and the other circumvents its rim. Both are worth the effort as they each offer a unique perspective of the crater, from its internal commotion to panoramic scenic vistas of the surrounding Mono Lake Basin and Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.  If you have to choose between them, you cannot go wrong.

XplorMor: Kayaking Mono Lake, Inyo National Forest, California

Kayaking to the Tufas

Kayaking on Mono Lake, California was one of the best expeditions we coordinated this year. The day was early October, blue skies with enough clouds to offer interest and no wind, making for glassy, reflective waters, and a day to remember!
Kayak Excursion on Mono Lake XplorMor Inc
XplorMor Kayak Excursion on Mono Lake
Mono Lake, situated in a 700 square-mile valley off Highway 395 just south of Lee Vining town in Mono County, California, is one of the oldest lakes in the western hemisphere.  It lies 13 miles east of Yosemite National Park, and boasts spectacular views of  the  high Sierra Nevada Mountain range along its eastern shore.  Mono lake is a large, yet shallow saline lake about 70 square miles in size, and was formed around 700,000 years ago.  The lack of any outlet or run-off forces the lake to maintain high levels of salts, creating a unique ecosystem and an amazing buoyancy for kayaks!

Relics of a Booming Wild West

Bodie Ghost Town is a time capsule to its "boom time" days, with beds made, tables set, lessons still written on the school chalk board, and cars parked in the driveways.  The town lies in silent wait for its former inhabitants that will not return.  It's as though the citizens of Bodie, gathered little belongings, and took off in the middle of the night, leaving even the clocks king.
Bodie Ghost Town XplorMor Inc
XplorMor expedition to Bodie Ghost Town
When the goldmines dried up, there was nothing left to help Bodie's people survive this inhospitable terrain so they were forced to seek new lives elsewhere.  The only movement now are rolling tumble weeds, an occasional bird and biting cold gusts of air.  Make sure you take a jacket no matter the time of year!  And, bring water and food are there are no provisions in the town.

A Gem of the Sierras

Glacier Lodge, as described by its owner, is a gem of the Sierras.  Tucked away in Big Pine Canyon, next to Big Pine Creek, the little wood cabins of Glacier Lodge offer respite after a long day of hiking on the trails in neighboring Inyo National Forest.
XplorMor Expedition, A Stay at Glacier Lodge
The rustic charm is evident as soon as you wind up the drive to check in at the main office cabin.  There's piles of wood, for guests to have personal fires in the evening outside their cabins, and a small shop offering limited supplies, and dine out food.  They'll even deliver orders right to your cabin which after a long day hiking was much appreciated!   The friendly staff offered excellent service, and truly made every effort to accommodate our needs (thank you!).
Alternately, each cabin is equipped with a kitchen and most cooking utensils, so you may prepare your own meals.  Make sure to stop in Big Pine for groceries as there's minimal offered at the Lodge.

A Hiker's Promised Land

Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail in Inyo National Forest, California has it all: from spectacular views of 14+ lakes, 14,000 ft. mountain peaks, and access to the southernmost glacier in the United States and the largest in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Palisade Glacier.  There are flowing rivers and waterfalls, rocky switchbacks, Golden Trout, Jeffrey and Lodgepole pines, Aspens, a gorgeous rock cabin built by Lon Chaney Sr. and glacier-fed lakes.  This trail is truly a nature lover's paradise.

John Muir once said, “The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness."  Big Pine Creek North Fork Trail gives life to these words.  From the moment your car leaves the 395 at Big Pine, California and heads into Big Pine Canyon, it's clear another world awaits; the further into the canyon, the clearer the vision.  The road ends at the parking area for Inyo National Forest, and the trailhead for accessing Big Pine Creek North and South Fork trails.

Petroglyphs at Fossil Falls

While driving on the 395 headed to Mono Lake and Inyo National Forest, an XplorMor Team member noticed the sign for Fossil Falls near a giant red cinder cone to the right off the highway.  They quickly googled for more info as I turned the car off the highway and onto the dirt road.  The Internet said we'd find a trail and interesting rock formations at the falls.  What that particular site failed to mention is that Fossil Falls is a dry creek bed; water hasn't run through it for ages.  Yet, there's plenty of signs to show how fiercely it once ran.
Fossil Falls XplorMor Inc
XplorMor Expedition to Fossil Falls, California
Fossil Falls rock formations were clearly carved and etched and smoothed over much time by the river that used to run through the valley from snow melt of the nearby Coso Mountain range.  We climbed down into crevasses and wound ourselves around the winding stone, and into the valley floor, exploring the facets and caves as we went.  We even came across some unexpected petroglyphs of animals.  A great find!

Shutout but not Shutdown

The planned XplorMor photo-expedition to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks was thwarted by the U.S. government shutdown.  We had to think quickly as we were already enroute to the parks.  Thanks to Starbucks and WiFi, we soon discovered another option: Mono Lake and other California State and Local Parks.
South Tufa Trail, Mono Lake, California
We re-routed our journey, and set course a little disoriented, yet optimistic.  Apparently we were not alone, encountering locals and travelers from Californians to Englishmen to Eastern Europeans to a Japanese couple who were also adrift and uncertain how to reorient themselves.  As the days unfold, Good Fortune seems to have followed along for the duration with one lovely adventure leading into the next.  Even the weather has behaved beautifully. And instead of another trip to Sequoia, though beautiful and worthy of numerous visits, the new destinations are exactly that: new.  Finding places and trails and scenic views not previously experienced adds to the excitement.

There has been exceptional photo opportunities and memory-making moments to share.  So with life's lemons, we made tasty lemonade and despite the shutout, we were not shutdown.

Project Shadow Event

Project Shadow will take place on the Fall Equinox, September 22, 2013
Project Shadow aims for participants to post photos of shadows on the Fall Equinox when the “Earth is not tilted toward or away from the Sun and the length of the day is the same at all points on the Earth's surface.”   The goal is to capture shadows around the planet on a single day as seen through each person’s perspective, and to promote getting out there and sharing the experience through photography.  A shadow could be of a building, your cat, a tree, you… possibilities are endless… get as creative as you wish!  See links below for examples of shadow photography.
The reason for participating is to have fun.  It’s about coming together as a community and sharing our vision, creativity and a moment of our day.  The photos may also allow us to see other parts of the world.   And, if the weather is bad and shadows cannot be seen, add some innovation.

XplorMor on the Wildside

While on expeditions, the XplorMor team enjoys spotting and observing wildlife in natural habitats.  It's an exciting feeling to be walking along a trail, and catch a movement with the corner of your eye, only find a rare snake slithering in the grasses or an endangered American Crocodile chewing on a fish or the tiniest of caterpillars hanging on a leaf prick you with its stingers while your stooping to take a photograph!  The joys of exploring the wild.

XplorMor Expedition Wildlife Photos - Green Iguana
It's wonderful to just get out there and explore our world; however, it's another to open yourself up to spying creatures in the wild, especially the minute ones that are so easily missed. XplorMor Team has found that documenting the wildlife creates a further depth to getting out there, a whole new layer in the natural world.  And, an important one.  The explorer should be aware of all facets of the world they are exploring in order to make their impression the least impactful, to solely observe and leave no trace.

Recently, and thanks to identification assistance from  iNaturalist, we have begun to identify and catalogue much of the wildlife encountered on XplorMor Expeditions.  This has also lead to a better understanding of the environments we've explored by educating us in a new way about the habitats and importance of ecosystems.
